Melt's Lenten Thought for the Week

As we look forward to the coming, and the crucifixion, of the One, it gives us reason to pause and reflect on what preceded His coming. There is a moment in Genesis that most of us miss when reading it. It happens on the sixth day of creation…the day that the Trinity made us. Prior to making us, every act of Trinitarian creation begins with three words: “Let there be!”  Every time those words are spoken the thing that they are spoken about comes into existence. But on the sixth day God – the Trinity - pauses. The Trinity pauses to have conversation with one another. Then…three new words are spoken following the conversation. “Let us make…humankind in our image.”  It’s almost as if the Trinity pauses to savour the moment of the highest point of their creation. The making of their children. Jesus pauses, as the agent of God’s creation, to take a breath before beginning the ultimate masterpiece of love. We don’t get to hear the conversations our earthly parents had before conceiving us, but here God allows us to hear the heavenly conversation that precedes your and my creation. Jesus did not only speak the stars into creation. He spoke you into creation.
